Tamagotchi won an Ig Nobel Prize in 1997. The official citation: "for diverting millions of person-hours of work into the husbandry of virtual pets." Which is a polite way of saying a plastic egg hijacked humanity's attention and we thanked them by buying 82 million of them. One digital chicken that would die if you went to school without feeding it first, that was the product.
